Composition Overview:
Composition shingles are commonly referred to as
asphalt shingles, dimensional shingles, architectural shingles, roof
dealies, thing'a'majigs and the list goes on depending on which
Seattleite you are talking to. Technically, composition shingles are
all materials that are made from taking a fiberglass mat, saturating
it with asphalt and then covering it with granules or little rocks
(for discussion purposes). These mats can be layered on top of each
other to form one shingle through a process of lamination (laminate
shingles) and they can be cut into different shapes, sizes and colored
different ways. Furthermore, different amounts of asphalts and
thicker fiberglass mats can be used to create different grades of
composition shingles. The combination of all of these characteristics
is what you are juggling when you are choosing between one composite
shingle or another.
Differences in cut out shape make these two shingles different. These
are actually two of the most popular shingle types. The Presidential
Shingle (on the left) is noted for having a distinct look that is most
similar to natural shake. For
this reason the Presidential shingle has been inducted into many
Homeowner's associations that previously did not allow composition.
The shingle on the right is a cut out of a traditional architectural
shingle. |
